LED Lighting Installation for Warehouses

The adoption of LED lighting in warehouses began in the early 2000s and has accelerated significantly in recent years due to increased affordability and sustainability concerns.

At Wells Electrical, we can design and implement new lighting systems that use LEDs instead of older lighting options, such as fluorescent or metal halide lights.

Compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, LED lights use 75% to 80% less energy, resulting in significant cost savings on electricity bills.

They also offer the added benefits of dimming and remote control for efficient energy usage and customizable lighting design.

Over the past fifteen years, our technicians have done considerable electrical and lighting work for distribution hubs, warehousing and storage facilities for major retailers around the United Kingdom.

You can trust our knowledgeable and experienced engineers to advise on new electrical and lighting installations, repairs and refurbishments to existing buildings. We'll work alongside your team to minimise downtime for maintenance or LED installation work.

UK standards for warehouse lighting

The British Standard BS EN 12464-1:2021 outlines UK warehouse lighting standards, along with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Adhering to their specific requirements creates a safe, productive and well-lit work environment that complies with UK regulations and promotes employee well-being.

General lighting requirements

Illuminance: The minimum illuminance for open areas is 100 lux and 200 lux for spaces where employees are continuously working.

Uniformity: Lighting uniformity should be maintained to minimise glare and shadows.

Colour rendering: The colour rendering index (CRI) should be at least 80 to ensure accurate colour perception.

Specific lighting requirements for tasks

·  Picking and packing: 200 lux at floor level and 300 lux at the face of racking.

·  Loading and unloading: 150 lux at floor level.

· Inspection: 300 lux at the task area.

·  Office areas: 500 lux at work plane level.

Emergency lighting requirements

  • There must be emergency lighting in all areas where personnel may be present in the event of a power failure.

  • The illuminance level of emergency lighting should be at least 1 lux at floor level.

  • Emergency lighting must be powered by a separate electrical circuit from the main lighting system.

All employers are legally responsible for providing suitable and sufficient lighting for their employees. Failure to do so may result in legal action, which is why UK warehouse owners rely on the expertise of contractors like Wells Electrical.

We consider cost-effectiveness and compliance when providing excellent solutions that guarantee visual comfort and absence of glare.
